Liam Graham | WhatTheHYPE Mix-Tape Review
Jame$ Lean put in some solid work on this whopping 20-track tape. Combining efforts with other local talented emcees such as Frank Douglas, Xvvixr and Athony Champion, the tape alternates between skits and music to an even total of ten each. As the name of the tape would suggest, the skits are audio excerpts from the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Starting out with a skit titled, Hey John, which utilizes audio from the scene where Dicaprio makes his first sale for his group, it conveys the message behind the mix-tape: Making money with no hesitation.
Looking over the organization of the tape again after listening to the full deal I realized why Lean decided to sort it the way he did. If you really take in each of the tracks, you notice similarities between it and the skit that precedes it. For example, Hey John, is about Dicaprio showing his team how to run the numbers up and maximize profit. Run it up is all about maximizing profit and how Lean will “Do anything to get those numbers up”. The skit, Dragging me down, is about how when you rise people want to tear you down. The track, That’s Okay, is about Lean not bothering with those wanting to ruin his success. Catching on to what I’m getting at? This pattern repeats throughout the mix-tape and is a nice creative touch that complements the overall product. Take a listen and see for yourself.
The overall feel of the instrumentals in the tape would fit into the trap genre of rap, with the only exception being the instrumental for Purse. While the lyrics still fit the trap genre, I personally found that instrumental to have more of a more deep self-reflective feel that would suit an “inner-pain/struggle” style of track better. The guitar in the beat cries for it I swear. What matters is that the audio quality is clean, the bass is thick, and thank god the beats aren’t oversaturated with too many sounds because that just gets obnoxious.
Lean played his cards well with this one because I don’t really have anything bad to say about the mix-tape. I’m not the biggest trap fan and I AM NOT a nice critic that panders to ego. I make exceptions for trap artists like Migos and Future because I consider them pioneers of the style, but it’s not my main cup of tea when it comes to rap. Despite that, I still greatly enjoyed the mix-tape/artistic creativity and respect both the artists and producers behind its production for it. If you love trap I highly suggest you indulge your tastes with this well done Mix-tape from Jame$ Lean and let us know what you think in the comments below.
