Liam Graham | WhatTheHYPE Mix-tape Review

EDIT: The individual DatPiff track-list has been replaced with the Soundcloud long-mix due to errors with the DatPiff flash player.  WhatTheHYPE apologizes for any confusion.

Jame$ Lean continues his creative streak with the mix-tape Lebron Jame$ Lean.

Hosted by DJ Vincy Prince, the work consists of 23 tracks which is a tip-of-the-hat to the aforementioned legend the tape is named after.  Lean as well as Nizama Amazin’ and Anthony Champion have heavy presence on the tape, but there are other featured artists such as Stitch, Ace Pronto, Dutchess C Millz, Raz Fresco and Desran.  The tape also features a talented roster of producers, bringing in the talents of Philthy Beatz, Drew Taylor, Ace Pronto, TheBeatPigs, Lean himself and more.  The full long-mix is available below for listening.

The audio quality throughout the entire tape is consistently good aside from the smallest amount of clipping in the intro to the tape, from that point onwards the quality is consistent and error free.  You can distinguish the different aspects of each beat, and there is enough variety in instrumental style to keep the flavour of the tape fresh after getting a few tracks deep.  The dominant genre of the tape seems to be Trap, but there are hints of R&B/Reggae dancehall scattered throughout the playlist in tracks like RN, My Way, Look Away and Cyattie.  Higher energy tracks that would fall into the aforementioned trap genre would be Finesse, Cheque, Long Day, Killuminati, Mind the Drip and King James.

In conclusion, the mix-tape is a great piece of work crafted by many talented, local hands.  When compared to the previous big project Lean released, The Wolf of Bloor Street, it is a tad disappointing that there aren’t any skits.  That being said, the absence of skits doesn’t takeaway from the listening experience as the tape is already chock-full of great tracks.  Perhaps the next project Lean drops will see the return of skits, but until then, Lebron Jame$ Lean is more than enough to sate your hunger for good local rap.  Follow Lean on twitter @jameslean905
